Adam Laws won the Guildford Closed Table Tennis Championships men's title for the sixth time when he beat Ross Saxby in the final. The cream of Guildford table tennis assembled for the championships which were held at the table tennis centre at Christ's College, Guildford.
As the players progressed to the quarter finals it was quite clear that the competition was wide open but the first shock came when left-hander, Ross Saxby upset the number one seed Chris Bush. Richard Tanner demolished John Robinson and Shaun Robertson won a pulsating competition against Andy Mudie in five sets. The writing was perhaps on the wall when Adam Laws comfortably beat the dangerous, hard hitting Matt Craig playing consistent and controlled table tennis.
The semi-finals saw the skilful and evergreen Richard Tanner take on the improving, upstart, Ross Saxby. In a monumental match Saxby just edged through 12-14, 12-10, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9 in a match that had everyone on the edge of their seats. Adam Laws showed his class by beating Shaun Robertson in three straight sets in the other semi.
Would the experienced Laws overcome the emerging and exciting Saxby in the final? Saxby started well and won the first set and only just lost the second. Saxby started making errors as Laws tightened his game and gradually the match slipped away and Laws emerged as a worthy and popular winner.
The doubles competition also produced some exciting table tennis. In the semi-finals Shaun Robertson and Andy Mudie defeated number one seeds Richard Tanner and Chris Bush in four sets and Adam Laws and Matt Craig beat Anthony Johnson and Ross Saxby in three straight sets. The final was a cracker with Laws and Craig defeating Robertson and Mudie in four close games which saw many brilliant rallies occupying the entire court.
Adam Laws completed the hat-trick of championships when he teamed up with Fei Fei Pei to defeat Sarah Horsnell and Chris Bush in the Mixed Doubles final.
In the Ladies Singles Sarah Horsnell overpowered Lucy Burks in the final but Lucy gained her revenge when partnering Fei Fei Pei they defeated Sarah Horsnell and Sally Cimiotti in the Ladies Doubles.
John Robinson defeated Richard Seymour in both the Veterans and Masters Championships and completed a good day by partnering Tony Reynolds in a tight victory over Richard Seymour and John Callcut in the Veterans Doubles. Sally Cimiotti won the round robin Ladies Veterans competition with Carole Ingram as runner-up. The singles consolation event for group losers was won by Micky Lang.
The Championships are open to all Guildford league players and the restricted divisional championship gives everyone a chance to take home some silverware. Full details can be seen below.
This was a high class championship and despite much tension was played in a friendly and sporting manner throughout the two days.
