1934 – 2009
 
Next season the Guildford Table Tennis Association is 75 years old!
 
We intend to celebrate this milestone and use the occasion to promote our great sport throughout the area. We have a number of functions planned so please therefore pencil the following dates in your diary as there will be something for everyone.
 
14th November 2009 – In association with Guildford Borough Council, the ETTA, and Active Surrey we will be holding a public open day at the new table tennis centre at Christ’s College. We will be advertising the event throughout the borough and our aim is to encourage the public to ‘have a go’. We would like every club to have a representative at the centre throughout the day.
 
20th March 2010 – We will be holding an ‘international’ competition which will consist of teams from Guildford, Malta, Germany, Jersey,Guernsey, France and Hungary. All countries we have visited and been made welcome to over the past few years. There will be some top quality table tennis on view.
 
20th March 2010 – There will be a dinner for Guildford players, past and present together with our overseas guests. The Mayor Elect for Guildford and the Chairman of the ETTA have already agreed to attend. There will be dancing and a quiet area for reminiscing with lots of archives on view (John Diggens has extracted every press cutting since the war!) There will be a grand raffle with top prizes and a chance to met old friends and adversaries.
 
21st March 2010 – We will be holding an open tournament for all Guildford players, past and present together with our guests. There will also be a plate competition as we want this to be a celebration of table tennis for everyone, regardless of their standard, so there will be plenty of games for everyone.
 
We will be publishing a book entitled ’75 years of table tennis in Guildford’ – stories, anecdotes, statistics, results etc. This will be available at a price of about £7.50 from September.
 
We will be producing a commemorative, limited edition, table tennis shirt with the Association’s logo and and the number 75. Wouldn’t it look great if everyone was wearing one at the open day and the competition!
 
The purpose of this message is to whet your appetites and to ensure that you make a note of these dates, but we would like your help right now:
 
  • Do you have a spare room and would you be willing to act as a ‘host’ ? This is most important as we need to send details to our overseas guests as soon as possible.
