Season's Preview

The season begins with all five divisions full which is the first time for several years that this has occurred.
The favourites for the Premier Division will undoubtedly be Burymead B, the current champions. On paper their closest challengers should be Godalming A but they suffered badly through last season with injuries and unavailability so could be just a mid-table outfit again. Burymead A were the surprise runners-up last campaign but I do not anticipate such a strong challenge this season. Godalming B could prove to be the strongest of the three Godalming sides. Merrow A will be stronger this season but the B and C teams will be content with mid-table as will Challoner A. This just leaves Broadmoor, Burymead C and College Hill A the latter two being my tips to go down with Burymead B champions again with Merrow A in second spot.
In the First Division Challoner B will be hoping to go back up to the top flight and I think they will occupy one of the promotion slots. Surprise packets could be Allianz who have strengthened their squad. Aftermath A, Bramley A, Ash A and B may well fill the rest of the top half of the table. Merrow D, College Hill B and Cody A will probably be the next three, not necessarily in that order. This leaves Woking LTC A, Aftermath B and Godalming D. I believe the latter two will be relegated with Challoner B champions and Allianz second.
Woking LTC B is my tip for the Second Division title in what looks a very level division – a stark contrast to last season. The rest of the division is very unpredictable. Aftermath C will be near the top as will one of the Bramley sides, the one recently relegated from the first division, and Godalming E. College Hill C should be in the top half with another of the Bramley teams. Merrow E should be around mid-table but separating Aftermath D, Burymead D, Godalming F, Cranleigh A and Bramley D is difficult. I think Bramley D and Cranleigh A will fill the bottom two slots with Aftermath C being second.
Challoner C must be favourites for the Third Division title. After a year in the division above they will be confident of doing well. Aftermath E look to offer the greatest threat and I think they will go up with Challoner. Merrow F, the two Ash teams and College Hill D will probably comprise the rest of the top half with Abinger quite close behind. Woking LTC C should be another around mid-table which leaves the three Godalming teams and Cody B. I think Cody B will drop down together with one of the Godalming teams.
Bramley E is my bet for the Fourth Division title, with College Hill E in close attendance. The rest of the division is difficult to predict with many new players sprinkled with some wrinkly veterans.
There is an Open Day at Ash Victoria Hall on Sunday for anybody who wishes to try the sport. It runs from 10 – 4 with equipment provided and free refreshments.
For those who have received their Handbooks there are some major errors with the Merrow and Woking LTC information. All secretaries will have received the amendments.
