The quarter-finals of the Handicap Cup produced some tight matches. The all College Hill match between the D and E team was always leaning to the E team after The D team could only put out two players, Steve and Lesley Clement. Steve won all his games but Lesley could only win once so the E team went through. Ash C entertained Ash A which was made up of D team players. Sandy Simpson, for the C team, was too strong for the A team and won all three. Margaret Thornton picked up a brace for the C team as did Sheila Pretty for the A team. Cranleigh A provided a good team performance against Godalming X with all the team, Angela Coventry, Mark lockyer and Peter Coventry winning twice as did Shula Laws for Godalming. In the final quarter-final Ash D eased past College Hill C with all matches tight. David Mackinnon won all his three for Ash with Jackie Rice playing some marathon rallies to get a couple of wins.
The performance of the week in the Second Division was the 9-1 success for Godalming E against Merrow E. Carsten Horne and Danny McGranaghan notched trios whilst Jason Minoo won twice. This puts Godalming within a point of Merrow. This result enabled Bramley C to tighten it’s grip on the division with a 7-3 win at Aftermath D. Geoff Nevitt was unbeaten for Bramley with Kerry East bagging a couple as did Jim Roberts for Aftermath. Godalming F is still in the frame for promotion and a 6-4 defeat of Bramley D did them no harm. Steve Cheeseman was the saviour for Bramley with a full house but doubles from Gordon Grover and Fred Florance eased Godalming to a solid win. At the other end of the table Burymead D will be grateful for a 6-4 win over Cranleigh A. Jack Harrington was unbeaten for Burymead with Richard Green adding a couple. Woking LTC B will also be grateful for a 6-4 win, this against Aftermath C. Brian Hartles notched a trio whilst Kevin Barkham picked up a pair as did Dave Wilson for Aftermath. Bramley B and College Hill C shared the points with Linda Makepeace unbeaten for Bramley and Brian Smithers and Jim Clement claiming two wins apiece for College Hill.
In the Fourth Division the Godalming teams M and K drew. Chris Kelly’s full house for the M team was no surprise but Juliette Moussare’s couple of wins was and demonstrate the progress she is making. Tim Boxall won twice for the K team who still head the table. Bramley E lie second after a 7-3 win over Godalming N. Tony Laws won all Godalming’s points with Bob Holmden, Stephen Pinn and David Barraclough each winning twice. Woking LTC D and Emmanuel TTC shared the points with Emmanuel’s Clive Mattin the unbeaten player. Mervyn Newell and Malcolm Hollett both won a couple of games. All of these results allowed College Hill E to ease nearer to the top after a whitewash of Woking LTC E. Paul Stock, David Reading and Paul Tanton formed the winning team.
Godalming H, in the Third Division, will be pleased with their 6-4 win over Cody B. Shula Laws won all her matches with Norrie Short and Ken Thompson each getting a brace for Cody. Woking LTC C re-asserted their promotion credentials with a 9-1 drubbing of Godalming J. Mike Frean and Mike Glen proved unbeatable and Greg Kendall got a couple of wins for Woking.
