The various cups provided some excellent nail-biting matches. Leading the way was the semi-final of the Percy Lawes Cup contested between Godalming A, the holders, and Burymead B. Robin Honey started for Godalming and lost to Richard Tanner then Godalming levelled when Adam Laws just beat Chris Bush 13-11 in the fifth. Burymead regained the lead when Matt Pernet proved too strong for Alain Choo-Choy. Laws then restored parity with victory over Tanner. Pernet then put Burymead 3-2 up with victory over Honey and then a comfortable victory for Bush against Choo-Choy put Burymead a win away from the final. Laws delayed this with his third win, against Pernet but Tanner then easily beat Choo-Choy to take Burymead through 5-3.
The semi-final in the Intermediate Cup was even tighter. Challoner B hosted Ash B and Crispian Knight put Challoner ahead against Martin Gilbey. Ash hit back with Alan Gess getting the better of Steve Collins. Maria Taylor-Woodward then beat Ian Saxby to put Challoner ahead once more. Ash now had a strong run with Gilbey beating Collins, Saxby proving too strong for Knight and Gess beating Taylor-Woodward. This meant Challoner had to win the remaining matches. Collins started the fight back with a win over Saxby and when Taylor-Woodward beat Gilbey it came down to the final match, Knight against Gess. Not surprisingly it went the distance with Knight edging through 11-6 in the fifth.
Both Lewis Cup semi-finals provided good matches. Aftermath D entertained College Hill C and started poorly losing the first three matches and eventually the tie 5-2. Jim Clement was unbeaten for College Hill with Jim Stewart and Mike Caudrey chipping in with a win apiece. Alan Sherwin and Jin Roberts each picked up a win for Aftermath. The other semi-final was marginally closer. Aftermath C got the better of Merrow E, 5-3. Ce Guo was unbeaten for Merrow but braces from James Sellen and David Harden and a critical win from Martin Strutt got Aftermath the five matches they needed.
The Last Three Cup produced another epic semi-final. Godalming J entertained Challoner C. Wins were swapped throughout the evening with Challoner never more than a win ahead until 4-4. By then Tom Taylor-Woodward had won all his three for Challoner and Jason Gee chipped in with a single win. Hugh McKee and Saj Swamy had won duos for Godalming and so the stage was set for the decider, Alan Lewell from Godalming against Ken Lemon. Neither had been successful during the evening and it was a tense affair with the first four games being shared and decided by just two points. So who would win the deciding set. Inevitably it went to deuce and then Lewell just won the match for Godalming by taking the next two points.
The Veteran’s Cup provided an easy 6-0 win for Burymead over Challoner. Richard Tanner, Phil Snelson and Gordon Holmes being the victorious trio.
In the Premier Division College Hill A chalked up a couple of welcome 6-4 wins against Burymead C and Challoner A. Jorge Dominguez won five out of six in the two matches with Andy Clegg winning half his matches and Graham Nutting picking up a couple of, probably, very important points. In the Challoner match Shaun Robertson was unbeaten for Challoner and Tim Goodship won two for Burymead when they entertained College Hill.
