Unfortunately the three cup finals completed this week could not match the drama of the Lewis Cup. The premier knock-out cup, the Percy Lawes, was won by champions Burymead B. The team of Richard Tanner, Chris Bush and Michael Hill was never in any danger against Merrow B which consisted of Richard Seymour, Graham Faulkner and John Callcut. Burymead won the match 5-0 but played the sixth game which Callcut won for Merrow against Hill.
Another double winning outfit is Challoner B who dismissed the challenge of Bramley A in the final of the Intermediate Cup. Crispian Knight, Maria Taylor-Woodward and Steve Collins easily beat Peter Palmer, Nick Gould and Geoff Nevitt with Palmer’s victory over Collins the only Bramley success.
There was some consolation for the Bramley club when their two fourth division teams fought out the new competition for the lowest division. A new trophy has been commissioned and will be called the Bob Hammond Trophy in recognition of the many years service he has given the league most recently in running the knockout competitions. In this final Bramley E which comprised Bob Holmden, David Barraclough and Gary Nicholson overcame their F team 8-1. The F team’s only success being a win for Pam Wells against Holmden. Mike Smith and Mark Wells made up the rest of the F team.
The League’s management committee has been very busy and made two decisions which affected the top and bottom of the Premier Division. The match between Burymead C and Godalming B has been awarded a 5-5 scoreline after the original match was abandoned after an unfortunate incident at the beginning of the match. This gives Godalming B second spot and seals Burymead C’s relegation. The match between College Hill A and Godalming C was awarded 10-0 to College Hill meaning that they stay up and Godalming C is relegated.
In the First Division Godalming D secured second spot after beating Ash B 7-3 and Cody A 8-2. The squad of Yawei Wang, Matt Craig, Christoph Pietrek and Pavlina Polokova has done well to steal the second promotion slot. At the other end of the table College Hill B kept their hopes of staving off relegation alive by beating a two-man Allianz outfit 7-3. Challoner B finished their campaign 6-4 against Allianz where there was a spectacular result with Vijay Bhaskar proving too strong for Maria Taylor-Woodward but Crispian Knight ruled the evening with a full house.
Merrow E’s promotion from the Second Division was confirmed when Godalming F failed to whitewash Bramley C who have the distinction of being the only team in the entire league to remain unbeaten. At the other end of the table Bramley B escaped relegation after an 8-2 thrashing of Aftermath D. Linda Makepeace and Joe Melchionno were unbeaten for Bramley with this defeat relegating Aftermath D. Joining them will be Bramley D.
In the Third Division Ash D sealed the second spot with an 8-2 win over Godalming H and a 6-4 success over Abinger. They used all their squad of Jackie Rice, David Mackinnon, Sheila Pretty, Ben Fereday and Hudson Foley. A potent mixture of experience and dynamic youth that will do well at the higher level. Godalming H and Aftermath E will fill the two relegation slots after Aftermath failed to get the points they needed against Merrow F although they won the match despite the efforts of Carole Ingram who secured a trio for Merrow.
College Hill E have picked up promotion from the Fourth Division with them and Godalming K having a shoot-out for the title this week.
