There was an excellent quarter-final tie in the Intermediate Cup when Challoner B, who must be favourites for promotion, entertained Cody A. Peter Anthony started by beating Maria Hilsdon to give Cody the lead. Challoner hit back when Crispian Knight overcame Paul Shakespeare. Kin Chan restored the lead for Cody by beating Steve Collins in five games, Challoner then took a 3-2 lead when Knight beat Anthony and Hilsdon beat Chan. Cody squared the match with victory for Shakespeare over Collins. The critical seventh game was won when Knight suffered defeat for the first time against Chan. Collins again drew Challoner level with victory over Anthony. Shakespeare, in the ninth game, proved just too good for Hilsdon to give Cody the match 5-4. No player lost or won all three.
Challoner B bounced back from that unexpected defeat to secure an excellent First Division result, 7-3, against previously unbeaten Godalming D. Crispian Knight was undefeated for Challoner with team-mate Maria Hilsdon winning twice as did Godalming’s Carsten Horne. Merrow E thrashed their club mates the D team 8-2. Ce Guo led the way with a maximum whilst David Joyce and Nigel Oh both won twice but neither could beat the D team’s John Grant. There was a fiercely fought contest between Bramley A and College Hill B which went the way of Bramley 7-3. Peter Palmer won all his three for Bramley with colleagues Geoff Nevitt and Nick Gould each winning twice.
Another team experiencing defeat for the first time this campaign was Abinger A in the Second Division who fell to Bramley B 7-3. Steve Cheeseman recorded a trio for Bramley and he was supported by Linda Makepeace who won a couple. This was matched by Abinger’s Mike Hughes. Godalming G won for the first time this season when they edged past Aftermath D 6-4. The star performer of the evening was Aftermath’s Paola Sala with a full house but braces from Godalming’s Adit Gandhi and Chris King helped them over the winning line. Aftermath C entered the promotion battle after an emphatic 8-2 victory over Cranleigh. David Harden led the way with a maximum whilst team-mates Martin Strutt and James Sellen each won twice.
A major shock in the Third Division when Ash C beat high flying College Hill D 6-4. Anthony Connelly proved to be the hero for Ash with a maximum whilst team mate Tony Harrison chipped in with a duo. Steve Clement bagged a brace for College Hill. Godalming H and Burymead D shared the points with Burymead’s Gordon Aplin recording a maximum. Chris King and Fred Florance each won twice to keep Godalming firmly in the promotion race.
