Bramley B, in the Second Division, would have been surprised to have found themselves at the bottom of the table but that is unlikely to happen again after a 9-1 trouncing of Woking LTC B. Geoff Nevitt and Linda Makepeace were unbeaten for Bramley with Mike Willimott only losing to Ahmad Matoorian. Bramley C moved into second spot on the back of a 7-3 against Cranleigh A. Kerry East and Nevitt playing for his normal team grabbed all the points. Godalming E are just behind the promotion places after a tight 6-4 win over Burymead D. Carsten Horne, Mike May and Jason Minoo each won twice for Godalming as did Jack Harrington for Burymead.
The leadership in the Fourth Division seems to change every week and the current leaders after a 6-4 win is Emmanuel. They edged past a two-man Burymead E outfit thanks to an unbeaten pair from Stephen Schofield. Mike Dray and Bob Sacre each won their other singles for Burymead. Woking LTC D are one of the favourites for promotion and they easily beat close rivals Godalming L 8-2. Mervyn Newell and Alex Bolychevsky were unbeaten for Woking with Malcolm Hollett getting a brace. Cranleigh B proved too strong for Godalming N, winning 8-2 with Chris Ray and John Davies notching trios.
More detail from the Handicap Cup. Close fought match between the Premier team of College Hill A and
Godalming X which was made up of Div 2 and 3 players. Match was 4-4 and
went to the last game of the evening, with Ben Tahouri winning against
Phil Harrison by 8 points to give him a full house of 3 wins, and
ultimately giving Godalming a win. Each player won at least one game
during the evening.
Last years winners Ash B - now in Div 1 - got off to a good start with a
6-3 win over the Div 2 team of Godalming Y. Alan Gess led the way with
his 3 wins, ably backed up by Martin Gilbey with 2 wins and Mike Levey a
vital win by 1 point against Danny McGranagan. Gordon Grover picked up 2
wins for the losers.
Ash C from the 3rd div also got off to a good start by winning their
match 6-3 against the 1st div team of Cody A. Tony Harrison led the way
with his 3 wins, backed up with 2 wins by Margaret Thornton, and a win
by Dave Bentall.
The all 4th Div match between Cranleigh B and Bramley F, ended with a
6-3 win for the Cranleigh team. Close fought match with 7 of the 9
matches being won within a 9 point difference. Chris Ray led the way for
Cranleigh with a full house, backed up by John Davies with 2 wins, and
Gerald Stacey with 1 win.
Bramley E fielded a team of 2 x Div 1 players and a Div 4 player against
a Godalming Z team consisting of 2 x Div 3 players and a Div 4 player.
The Bramley team ran out eventual winners 6-3, with Peter Palmer and Bob
Holmden gaining all their points with maximums. David Livingstone, Helen
Ross and Brian Richards all took the scalp of the Div 1 player Nick
Gould !!
College Hill D from the 3rd division ran out 8-1 winners against
Challoner C who included 2 x Div 3 players and 1 x Div 1 player in their
team. Derek Hubbard and Steve Clement both gained a full house, backed
up with 2 wins for Lesley Clement, who only lost out to Tom
Taylor-Woodward. With a big win under their belt, College Hill can
expect a tweak to their handicaps for the next round !
