FOR INCLUSION IN THE SURREY ADVERTISER
This week the Guildford Table-Tennis League saw the first rounds of the cup competitions.
In the ‘Last Two Cup’ Godalming L had a fine win against Bramley E with pairs from Louise Newman and Adrian Stell with Charley Penny chipping in to cement victory. In the same competition another tight match was Emmanuel ‘s 5-3 triumph in their match with Merrow G. There were many close sets including eight deuce games. Starring in this one was Stephen Schofield with a trio. Anil Gadage replied with two for Merrow. Ash B had a 5-1 win over Challenor C the score not really reflecting the overall result with Ash winning all three matches which went to five-Tony Harrison, James Wyncoll and Margaret Thornton did the business on the night.
According to the notes on the Intermediate cup encounter between Ash A and Merrow E there was great table tennis played in a convivial atmosphere with Ash taking it 5-3. A feature of the evening’s entertainment was the 4,5,2 hammering of Paul Myers by Nigel Oh- Paul vowed revenge at their next meeting.
In the Vet’s there was an intriguing clash between Godalming and Burymead with a 5-3 result for the Shackleford based club. Involved in this match were two ex-top Guildford and Surrey Juniors from the 70’s Simon Vine and Mark Handcock. For Godalming Simon took his sides three points.
In the league Burymead B got back to winning ways with a 10-0 result over Challoner B, although three matches went to five sets. Richard Tanner, Daniel Heo and Tim Waller were the main men on the night-It maybe that a tilt at the Premier title is not beyond the ten times champions despite a poor start.
Merrow E hit the top of the First Division with a resounding 10-0 over a luckless College Hill C side only the doubles going to five. Nigel Oh, David Joyce and Ce Guo did the damage. In the same Division Charlie Cunningham got a nice maximum for Godalming D in a 6-4 victory over Aftermath A with Steve Day providing good backing with a pair. Albert Cheung replied with two.
