The first batch of results have come through in the 75th Anniversary season and teams are beginning to show that they mean business. In the Premier Division Godalming A opened with a convincing 8-2 win over Challoner A. Michael Chan was undefeated for my title prediction whilst Andreas Pusch and Alain Choo-Choy both lost out to Rob Lemon. Burymead A thrashed Ash A 10-0 with Phil Snelson, Derek Holman and Gordon Holmes starting with maximums
The First Division is much more even this season and I expect very few thrashings. Bramley A started with a 7-3 win over Burymead C with Nick Gould in unbeatable form with a full house and Peter Palmer chipping in with a double. For the losers Dave Halfpenny picked up a pair. Aftermath A also started with a 7-3 win, this against Cody A. Simon Turner and Albert Cheung were unbeaten for Aftermath. Yet another 7-3 was recorded when Merrow E got the better of two-man College Hill A. Andy Clegg won twice for College Hill but he could not pass Shaun Newbold who was unbeaten for Merrow. Woking LTC A and Aftermath B shared the points in a tight encounter. Every player won and everyone lost but John Koenigsberger and Kevin Bown, for Woking, and Frank Roberts for Aftermath won twice.
Godalming D, in the Second Division, already look as if they may emulate their club mates from last season and dominate this division. A 9-1 win against Bramley B was an excellent start for them. Tony Harrild, Fei Fei Pei and Lucy Burks won all their singles but Bramley easily secured the doubles. The other results were much tighter. Woking LTC B overcame Aftermath C 6-4. Richard Carpenter, Ollie Carpenter and Owen Poelijoe all won twice for Woking with Dave Wilson notching a pair for the losers.The battle between the two promoted sides, Allianz and Merrow H, was edged 6-4 by Allianz. Clayton Green was unbeaten for Allianz with Ashley Barnes managing a duo for Merrow. Burymead D and Ash B shared the spoils with Karim Lawji, for Ash, unbeaten. He was well supported by Clive Mattin who picked up a duo as did Jack Harrington for Burymead.
In the Third Division the Cranleigh A and Aftermath D match was a tough opener for both teams but Cranleigh came through 6-4 with Angela Coventry and Mark Lockyer unbeaten. Newly promoted Merrow J triumphed against Ash C 7-3. Roy Benfield was unbeaten for Ash with Scott Gotham, Mark Francis and David Lush securing pairs for Merrow. Ash C has since recorded their first win with success over Abinger 6-4. The star of the evening, though, was Keith Sutton who was unbeaten for Abinger including the doubles. Tony Harrison, Margaret Thornton and your correspondent each tasted success twice.
There appears to be a wide difference in teams in the fourth division judging by the results to date. Godalming G whitewashed their J team with Paul Herbert, Helen Ross and Dom Carpenter picking up their first maximums of the season.Bramley E beat Cranleigh B 9-1 with Bob Holmden and David Barraclough securing trios and Assad Minoo winning twice. There was also a 9-1 scoreline when Woking LTC C overcame Burymead E. Michael Glen and Mike Kam each won three times with Alex Bolychevsky winning twice.
